The Power of a Rug

You know how a house built on a good foundation?

Just like that, a room's foundation is built on a rug.

Why do you need a rug? How do you choose the right rug? What color, what size?

What's a rug? All these questions...answered below

What is a rug?

A Rug is a carpet that accents a room, a hallway, a sink area without entirely covering the floor.

Why do you need a rug?

A rug is great way to add texture and layers to a space. It's the anchor that ties a room together

What color, what size?

When is comes to colors, I love a neutral rug. Reason being, you can easily mix and match accents to go with the rug. I have always had darker floors, so I've always used lighter rugs. Lighter rugs, not only brightens the room, it lifts up the room and also makes it look bigger.

Think Light grays and beiges. Think abstracts and natural designs. Orientals and patterns are beautiful when used correctly, but sometimes can also make a room look too busy.

Let's talk size

Growing up, in every house we had, our rugs were just big enough to accentuate the coffee table...that is a no-no. Your rug should be big enough to fit most, if not, all your furniture. Think 8 x 10 as a minimum.

A good rule of thumb that I follow (after multiple attempts of failing at choosing a rug)

is to allow for a minimum of 4 inches of the rug to fit under your furniture, with 6-8 inches of rug left on each side. This way, your furniture has breathing room and looks elevated.

A rug can also be used to break up a room. Above is my previous dining table set, without a rug. It made the room look dark and heavy...

...adding a rug was the first thing I did to break up the space. It divided up the kitchen and dining nook and instantly added light to the room. We also ended up painting the dining set a lighter color to add more brightness to the space.

Well friends, I hope this helps!
