I don’t know about you, but I love me some green bean casserole BUT every time I made it for Thanksgiving, my family wanted NO part of it…UNTIL I made it from scratch!
So, this recipe has nothing pre-made except for the crispy onion that I put on top.
What is a Casserole?
A casserole is a one-dish meal that is served in a deep baking dish, usually made up of glass or ceramic. Casseroles are usually baked so all the flavors from the ingredients within the dish mingle and come together well.
For this dish, I used a glass baking casserole. You can find similar ones here.
Prep work:
The prep-work required for this dish, is trimming off both sides of the green beans, washing and slicing up the mushrooms and peeling + mincing the garlic cloves.
Tools:
You will need:
A Casserole Dish
A whisk
A cutting board
Paring knife
A Pan
An Oven
A Stove
Now, let’s get to cooking:
For this recipe, I used:
1 lb. of Fresh Green Beans
2 cups of Half and Half
4 cloves of Garlic
2 cups of fresh sliced mushrooms
4 tbsp Butter
2 tbsp Flour
Salt and pepper to taste
Method:
Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees
Start your stove and heat up your pan on medium heat
Once the pan is heated, add in your butter. Once that’s melted, add in your flour and quickly whisk the 2 ingredients together
In about a minute add in the half and half and slowly whisk it together as it simmers into a sauce
To this sauce, add in the sliced mushroom and let it cook for a couple minutes.
Turn off your heat and slowly transfer this mixture to a baking casserole.
In another pot, bring to boil about 2 quarts of water
( you can do this simultaneously with the sauce)
Once the water is boiling, add in the fresh green beans and boil them for about 7-8 minutes before draining them. Once the water is drained, add the beans to the casserole.
Top the dish with the crispy onions, cover it up with a piece of foil and bake it for about 30 minutes!
Enjoy!
This makes a great side to any steak, chicken or baked Ham dish!
